combat trainer planes Ukrainian collided in the western region of Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an evening speech that the three included Andriy Pilshchykov, who goes by the nickname Juice. “He is a Ukrainian officer, one of those who really helped our country,” he said.
Air force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat described Pilshchykov as fluent in English and 29 years old. He is referred to as a mega-talented pilot and reform leader.
“You can’t even imagine how much he wanted to fly the F-16,” Ihnat wrote on his Facebook page. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine announced it had opened a criminal investigation into whether any flight preparation rules were violated.
“It is too early to discuss the details. Of course, all circumstances will be clarified,” Zelensky said.
The air force announced the crash via its Telegram app.
Zelensky notes that the third Saturday in August is also the time of military flights. Ukrainian civilians also celebrated professional day, saying the introduction of the F-16 would mark a “new level” for military aviation.
Svoboda radio share video of the blacken and destroy remains of the plane being remove from a field far from the front line in the village of Sinhury, about 10 kilometers south of Zhytomyr and about 150 kilometers west of Kyiv.
In the video, a man who cannot be name says he heard an explosion in the air above the school building. Two planes crashe in smoke and flames.
One woman described seeing two planes flying a distance from each other. The planes were getting closer to each other before the crash occurred.
Military analyst and former pilot Roman Svitan, in an interview posted by online outlet Espreso TV, said the crash was most likely related to the flying formation. He said the standard distance is 50-70 meters but sometimes airplanes practically overlap each other at 3 to 4 meters.
He said the L-39 could be a fighter, attack, bomber, and training aircraft. But in flying formation especially at low altitude, there is no time to save yourself. Zelensky offered his condolences to the pilot’s family.
