A Russia-appointed official acknowledged that Moscow troops had abandoned the Ukrainian village of Robotyne, more than a week after Kyiv announced it was recapturing the village.
Yevgeny Balitsky, Moscow’s top official in the Zaporizhzhia region, said in a television interview that Russian troops had withdrawn for tactical reasons. Therefore the Russian army moved to the hills,” RBC news media quoted him as saying. Ukraine has a bounty list for Russian soldiers who defect with military equipment such as aircraft and heavy weapons. For a Russian tank, for example, the prize is US$ 100,000. Russia had previously not acknowledged the loss of Robotyne, whose recapture was announced by Ukraine on Aug. 28. In its daily report on Tuesday, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said its troops had repelled two Ukrainian attacks near Robotyne.
Last week, Ukraine said its forces had liberated the Robotyne settlement in the southeast and were seeking to push further south in their two-month-old counteroffensive against Russian occupying forces.
His troops have raised the national flag over the strategic village and uploaded a video showing the action.
Troops then conducted clearing operations until they confirmed control last Monday.
“Robotyne has been freed,” Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar was quote as saying by the military on Monday.
The settlement is located 10 km south of the frontline town of Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region on the important road to Tokmak, a Russian-occupied road and railway hub.
The recapture of Tokmak would be a milestone as Ukrainian forces advance south towards the Sea of Azov in a military move intended to divide Russian forces following Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
More than 18 months after the Russian invasion, Ukraine says it has gained strength and managed to penetrate Russia’s first line of defense at several places on the front, despite repeated statements from Moscow that Ukraine’s three-month counteroffensive has failed.
